Broadcaster Sky is to make available an Android app next month that will allow Sky customers to watch five Sky Sports channels, ESPN, Sky News and 11 Sky Movies channels.
The app will allow owners of Google Android smartphones to access live broadcasts from all five Sky Sports channels, ESPN, Sky New, Sky 1, Sky Living, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts and 11 Sky Movies channels, providing they subscribe to the relevant package, from their device.
Now, Sky says its Sky Go mobile streaming platform, which is only available to its customers on iOS devices, will be unleashed on the Android OS by the end of February.
The rollout will begin with "the most popular Samsung and HTC handsets", according to the firm's online help centre.
Generally, users will have access to content from the same channels that are included in their package. Furthermore, non Sky subscribers can purchase a Sky Go Monthly Ticket, which starts from £15 per month for the entertainment package and rises to £40 a month for the sports, movies and entertainment package. It provides access to live broadcasts of the channels in the package selected as well as access to movies and TV shows on demand.
Sky initially started developing an Android version of the Sky Go app at the same time that it began work on the iPhone app, but because of the uniformed iOS that runs across iPhones, iPads and iPod's, developing the app for Apple devices was quicker and easier to complete.
The company said "we have to tailor the Sky Go app for each model of smartphone which takes considerable time." One can only wonder how other Android developers manage making their apps work on virtually all devices with a minimum resolution.
Sky trotted out the same sort of line regarding Android tablets too.
